Indou Hikaru[]
Yoshiki and Hikaru became friends as young children, because there weren't other children their age for them to play with;[1] it appears that the boys' fathers were friendly with each other as well.[2] Although they at times fought,[3] they maintained a close friendship into high school. Hikaru became a comforting presence for Yoshiki, who hated living in the countryside and always felt cramped and uneasy because of the villagers prying into his personal life. Hikaru had encouraged Yoshiki to come to him whenever he felt that way.[4]
From Yoshiki's perspective, Hikaru was slightly childish.[5] At the same time, to him Hikaru was someone who never cried[5] or appeared vulnerable.[6] After Hikaru's death, Yoshiki appears to have realized that that there are things he didn't know about Hikaru – for example, the possibility that he often wanted to cry.[5] Regardless, Hikaru still cared deeply for Yoshiki, as his dying wish was for Unuki-sama to stay by Yoshiki's side so that he wouldn't be alone.[7]
Hikaru's death strongly affected Yoshiki, especially because Yoshiki had found his corpse before "Hikaru" had fully finished repairing it. This incident has caused Yoshiki to have trouble sleeping for the six months following,[4] and he has been shown to have dreams about the last time he talked with Hikaru. He misses Hikaru so much that he is willing to live alongside the unknown entity inhabiting his body.[8]
Yoshiki had been in love with Hikaru for a long time. However, the comments from Hikaru, the elderly, his classmates and the pressure of having a normal family made him internalize his feelings as gross and decide to hide them from everyone until he opened up to Asako.[9]
"Hikaru"[]
Although Yoshiki was always aware that his friend Indou Hikaru was dead, he nevertheless decided that having something in his place was better than not having him at all. So after confirming "Hikaru" wasn't his friend anymore, attempted to continue living normally with him, even though Yoshiki felt some level of discomfort at not knowing what "Hikaru" really was.[8][10] However, after receiving a warning from Kurebayashi that Yoshiki was in danger of becoming mixed with the entity,[1] Yoshiki tries to mentally separate the new "Hikaru" from his old friend, instead of treating them as the same. He begins to feel a great sense of guilt that he is able to continue on as normal without his real friend by his side, and this results in pushing "Hikaru" away.[11] "Hikaru"'s outburst due to his fear of Yoshiki leaving him leads Yoshiki to further change his perspective. He begins to see "Hikaru" as childish and needing to be taught a more human sense of right and wrong. He acknowledges that "Hikaru" is deeply lonely, and decides that he is the one who should teach him.[12]
Despite Yoshiki still being somewhat afraid of what "Hikaru" is capable of, he still shows trust that "Hikaru" would not intentionally hurt him. For example, he agrees to reach into "Hikaru"'s insides on two separate occasions; notably, in both cases, Yoshiki is unafraid of expressing annoyance or anger when "Hikaru" crosses his boundaries or makes him too uncomfortable.[13][7] Furthermore, Yoshiki is willing to scold "Hikaru" for how he treats other people. In particular, he is horrified that "Hikaru"[14] killed Old Lady Matsuura and attempted to kill Asako,[15] so he confronts "Hikaru" about his lack of value for human life. He feels such a strong sense of responsibility for "Hikaru"'s behavior that he even attempts to kill "Hikaru" himself, in order to prevent him from hurting more people.[16]
However, Yoshiki is quite forgiving of "Hikaru" and tends to believe he is being truthful when he promises not to hurt others again.[7] As such, his perspective once again changes when he decides he should help investigate "Hikaru"'s origins rather than try to get rid of him.[16] Additionally, he begins to feel that "Hikaru" doesn't have to understand humans – "Hikaru" is a completely separate type of being, so he prefers that "Hikaru" isn't human and doesn't try to be human.[17] Yoshiki develops a fond attachment to "Hikaru", reacting with terror and panic when he is attacked by Tanaka,[17] and extreme relief when "Hikaru" is safely revived.[18] He also reacts negatively when "Hikaru" talks about returning to the mountain he came from, immediately shooting down the suggestion[17] and urging "Hikaru" to stay with him.[19] Conversely, Yoshiki is completely aware of the deep affection that "Hikaru" has for him,[10][12] as well as "Hikaru"'s desire to protect him from other dangerous entities.[14][20]
Yoshiki clarifies to Asako that his feelings for "Hikaru" are different from the ones he had for Hikaru: being "normal" doesn't matter when they're together and he feels saved, able to be himself even if "Hikaru" is a "monster". He doesn't label their relationship, they're simply each other's place to belong.[9]
Kurebayashi Rie[]
Yoshiki was a bit startled and wary of Kurebayashi after she first approached him, preferring to take some time before agreeing to meet up with her again in person.[1] Even though Yoshiki ultimately doesn't follow her advice to distance himself from "Hikaru",[12] he still remembers her warnings about eventually mixing with him, and going forward Yoshiki becomes much more effortful about mentally separating the current "Hikaru" from his old friend Hikaru.[11] Yoshiki is grateful to Kurebayashi when she helps him and "Hikaru" get away from an entity,[20] and is relieved to have her promise of support in investigating "Hikaru"'s origins.[21]
Yamagishi Asako[]
Being the only other member of Yoshiki's friend group who is aware that Hikaru was replaced by "Hikaru", Asako initially thinks it's very strange that Yoshiki has been able to continue on like everything is normal.[5] She has a strong sense of concern about his tendency to keep everything to himself rather than relying on her as a friend, to the point that she gets angry at him for keeping his distance.[22] Because of Asako's encouragement to commit to the path he's chosen with "Hikaru", Yoshiki is able to confide in her about his romantic feelings for Hikaru, as well as his unique relationship with "Hikaru". She feels an affinity with Yoshiki, since she'd had to hide her ability to hear impurities for fear of being judged, just as Yoshiki has had to hide his feeling for Hikaru to avoid judgement.[9]
Tadokoro Yuuki & Maki Yuuta[]
Along with Hikaru, Yoshiki met and befriended Yuuki and Asako during middle school. They all remained friends into high school, at which point Hikaru befriended Maki and brought him into the group.[23]
Family[]
Tsujinaka Kaoru[]
Kaoru is Yoshiki's younger sister by about 4-5 years (she is a first-year student in middle school).[24] They are shown to get along well. For example, Yoshiki goes out of his way into the neighboring city just to buy a specific type of mustard that Kaoru really likes.[13] When Kaoru starts skipping school in elementary, he shows a lot of concern for her wellbeing, worrying that she would fall behind academically or that she wouldn't be able to connect with her classmates anymore.[25] He ultimately accepts her and sympathizes with her position after her best friend transferred away – he thinks that it would become really hard to find motivation to wake up early and take the long trek to school if his best friend wasn't there with him.[26]
Tsujinaka Toshinori[]
Yoshiki has an estranged relationship with his father, to the point that he felt more attached to Hikaru's dad than his own.[27] Although they live together, during his childhood they hardly talked[2] to the point that Yoshiki cannot recall the last time he initiated a conversation with his father.[5] He has feelings of distaste toward his parents for how they always fought with one another, and he hopes that he will not grow up to be similar to them when he's an adult.[2] In particular, he resents his father for taking out his irritation on objects in the house, like hitting tables or slamming doors.[28] He also hates that he share many traits with his father from personality to appearance, even disliking that he inherited Toshi's trait of having many moles.[29][30]
