The Summer Hikaru Died Wiki

Tsujinaka Toshinori ( (つじ) (なか) (とし) (のり) , Tsujinaka Toshinori?) is one of the Characters in The Summer Hikaru Died, written and illustrated by Mokumokuren.

Overview[]

The father of Yoshiki and Kaoru and the husband of Satoko. He has a rocky relationship with his family.

Appearance[]

Toshinori is a man of large build. He is broad-shouldered and above average height, tall enough to hit his head on a doorway.[2] He has short, spiky black hair, thick eyebrows, and four moles on his face.

Personality[]

Toshinori is normally not very talkative and has a very low presence. He is overall a stern, gloomy person, to the point that people can hardly tell what he is thinking. He is passive during arguments, only offering up a sentence in reply even when being yelled at. He often fails to communicate his thoughts even when prompted to.[3] He often takes out his irritation on objects rather than people, doing things like banging tables or slamming doors.[4] He is somewhat clumsy, often bumping into objects around him.[2]

History[]

The Tsujinaka family has been involved in forestry for multiple generations. Toshinori wanted to be a novelist when he was young, but gave up on that dream because his parents disagreed. He inherited the family forestry business instead.[5]

His parents pushed him to go to Tokyo for university. Shortly after moving, he got a haircut from a woman named Satoko, who was working as a hairdresser. She would later become his wife. He told her that he kept getting lost, leading to the police questioning him frequently for wandering, and she worried about how he would fare after leaving the shop.[2]

Etymology[]

  • The kanji of his surname, Tsujinaka, are "crossroad" (辻 tsuji) and "middle of; inside" (中 naka).
  • The kanji of his given name, Toshinori, are "genius, excellence" (俊 toshi) and "chronicle, narrative" (紀 nori).
