The Summer Hikaru Died ( (ひかる) () んだ (なつ) , Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu?) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Mokumokuren.

Synopsis[]

Best friends Yoshiki and Hikaru have been stuck together like glue for most of their lives. Living in a small village and being the only children their age, the two boys find solace in each other's company. Their friendship seems picturesque at first glance, but Yoshiki has noticed a shift in Hikaru's demeanor ever since one fateful summer.
The "Hikaru" that sits beside him now is nothing like his friend. Despite his physical appearance and memories remaining exactly the same, Yoshiki knows something is amiss and that the Hikaru he once knew is gone. When he brings this up, Hikaru partially transforms into an otherworldly being, threatening to kill Yoshiki if he cannot accept it—while also professing its love for him.
Wracked with grief and unable to let go of his best friend, Yoshiki struggles to move on with his life as he finds himself getting closer to the new Hikaru. At the same time, strange occurrences begin to plague their village, bringing unsettling chaos.

English Publication[]

Yen Press announced in September 2022 that they had licensed The Summer Hikaru Died, a rising star in the world of horror manga by artist Mokumokuren, for English publication.[1] It is translated by Ajani Oloye and lettered by Abigail Blackman.[2]

Yen Press summarized the manga:

Two boys lived in a village: Yoshiki and Hikaru. The two did everything together…until the day Hikaru was encompassed by a mysterious light. That was when everything changed—Hikaru most of all. Yoshiki still wishes from the bottom of his heart to always stay by his side…but is there even a Hikaru left to be with?

Yen Press began releasing weekly English translations of whole chapters in epub format on June 18, 2024, starting with Volume 4, Chapter 17.[3] On June 19th, Mokumokuren announced that Yen Press would provide English simulpub release once translators caught up with the Japanese updates.[4] As of Chapter 31-1, the Enlgish simulpub by Yen Press releases chapters in 3-4 parts closely in time with the original Japanese publication in Young Ace Up.
