The Other Side ( () こう, Mukō?, lit. "opposite side; beyond")[1][2] is the world of the non-living.

It has also been referred to as That World (あの () , Ano yo?), as opposed to This World (この () , Kono yo?), the world of the living.[3]

The Curtain[]

Humans can only fix small distortions.

Humans can only fix small distortions.

The Other Side is not a physical location, but rather a non-physical realm that overlaps This World. This World and That World are essentially laid on top of one another, only separated by a thin "curtain".[2] At times, distortions occur, which can form a small hole that allows entities to pass through.[2] It is possible for a human to send entities back to That World and seal up the hole in the curtain.[4] Doing so is comparable to fixing a small hole in mesh fabric by rubbing it closed with a finger. If the distortion or hole is large enough that a tear is formed, it can not be closed by this method.[5]

Beings From the Other Side[]

Impurities (ケガレ, Kegare?) are similar to ghosts or spirits of people who have died[3] and they always collect in places where humans live, although they typically do not show themselves to most humans.[6] They are an accumulation of the souls of the dead and the strong emotions of the living, which have mixed together within That World and were then reborn back into This World.[2]

Mixed Ones[]

Majiri-mono ( () じりもの, Majirimono?, lit. "mixture, mixed thing") are humans that are "mixed", or who touch the boundary between This World and The Other Side.[7] When something from The Other Side enters a human, some of their "elements" become mixed into the human's soul. Once mixed up, the human begins to attract impurities more easily since they are closer to That World.[8]
