Overview

The Other Side ( () こう, Mukō?, lit. "opposite side; beyond")[1][2] is the world of the non-living.

It has also been referred to as That World (あの () , Ano yo?), in opposition to This World (この () , Kono yo?), the world of the living.[3]

Description[]

The Curtain[]

The Other Side is not a physical location, but rather a non-physical realm that overlaps This World. The two realms appear mostly identical to one another.[4] This World and That World are essentially laid on top of one another, only separated by a thin "curtain". Strong emotions of the living may mix together with the souls on The Other Side, allowing them to be reborn as impurities.[2]

Distortions[]

Humans can only fix small distortions.

Holes ( (あな) , Ana?) are passageways between the world of the living and The Other Side. They are created when distortions spontaneously form in the "curtain" that separates the world of the living and The Other Side,[2] allowing entities such as humans, impurities, or illegitimates to pass through. If the hole is small enough, then it is possible for a human- namely, Kurebayashi Rie- to send impurities back to The Other Side and seal up the hole.[5] She compares this method to fixing a hole in mesh fabric by rubbing it closed with a finger. However, if the hole is large enough to cause a tear in the fabric of the curtain, this method doesn't work.[6] Instead, a person or impurity must travel into the hole and sew it closed from The Other Side.[7]

Beings From the Other Side[]

Main articles: Impurity and Illegitimate

Impurities (ケガレ, Kegare?) are similar to ghosts or spirits of people who have died[3] and they always collect in places where humans live, although they typically do not show themselves to most humans.[8] They are an accumulation of the souls of the dead and the strong emotions of the living, which have mixed together within That World and were then reborn back into This World.[2]

The Other Side

How The Other Side appears to a human.

Illegitimates ( () とし () , Otoshigo?) are undying beings that appear extremely rarely in This World. Although Illegitimates do not actually fit into any human construct, humans that encounter them typically assume them to be a god, demon, or hell. They can bend reality in order to grant wishes for humans who request it, although the wishes typically result in tragic outcomes.[9]

There is another unidentified being that exists on The Other Side. To humans, it resembles a large eyeball surrounded by a circular, wheel-like arrangement. The arrangement consists of matter that is similar in appearance to "Hikaru"'s insides. When the being turns,[10] it causes the human to be transported through locations from their memories.[4]

Importantly, humans cannot survive on The Other Side and will eventually die if they travel there through a hole.[citation needed]

Mixed Ones[]

Majiri-mono ( () じりもの, Majirimono?, lit. "mixture, mixed thing") are humans that are "mixed up", or who touch the boundary between This World and The Other Side.[11] When something from The Other Side enters a human, some of their "elements" become mixed into the human's soul. Once mixed up, the human begins to attract impurities more easily since they are closer to That World.[12]

It has a stronger nuance of “to cycle or repeat” (as opposed to the meaning “to rotate”) and is the same as the one used in “the cycle of reincarnation” (輪廻転生).”
