Old Lady Matsuura ( (まつ) (うら) (ばあ) さん, Matsuura no baa-san?) is one of the Characters in The Summer Hikaru Died, written and illustrated by Mokumokuren.

Overview[]

An elderly woman living in a rural village. Upon seeing "Hikaru", she instantly knew that Nounuki-sama had descended from the mountains.

Personality[]

Matsuura has a fearful and cautious personality. She values her children and became distressed after losing one of them. According to her elder daughter, she has always been "strange".[1]

Appearance[]

Matsuura is an elderly woman of short stature. She has short, thin hair that reaches her chin. She wears a sun visor and a vest over a knee-length dress.

History[]

When she was a young girl, Old Lady Matsuura snuck into the Kubitachi Mountains and saw something terrifying. Since then, she has became extremely afraid of the mountain and its entities. While raising her two daughters, she strictly told them never to go into the mountains. But one day, the younger daughter went into the mountains and never returned, which confirmed and aggravated her fears. She seems to have had a rocky relationship with her elder daughter, who claims to have been heartless to Matsuura.[2]

According to her elder daughter, Matsuura has always had a strong spiritual sense.[1] True to this, she is able to immediately recognize that "Something" exists in the body of Indou Hikaru.[3]

Etymology[]

  • The kanji of her surname, Matsuura, are "pine tree" (松 matsu) and "bay, creek" (浦 ura).
