World[]

  • Kubitachi once belonged to a much larger domain that was split into five towns. Each town name contained reference to a body part.
    • Kubitachi – head (首 kubi)
    • Ashidori – leg (足 ashi)
    • Udekari, Udeiri – arm (腕 ude)
    • Darumasute – daruma (達磨, represents the torso)
    • Darumasute and Udeiri were later merged and renamed to Kibogayama. No one currently lives in Udeiri or the lower leg of Kibogayama.
  • There are a number of mass graves in the area, each containing only one type of body part.
    • In Kibogayama (Darumazuka Tunnel), there are torso bones. In Ashidori, there are leg bones. In Udekari, there are arm bones.
  • Settlers originally came to the area for its abundant mercury deposits.
    • Mercury was used to make "Uronuki medicine," which terminated a pregnancy. "Returning it to Unuki-san of the mountain" was an expression to refer to this method of abortion.
    • Over time, Unuki-san became known as Nounuki-sama.
  • Worship of Nounuki-sama declined in the neighboring villages as other religions settled in the area. However, Nounuki-sama worship continued in Kubitachi.
    • The villagers believed Nounuki-sama became a malevolent deity ( (たた) (がみ) , tatarigami?, i.e. a deity that brings calamity to individuals or communities) and caused a series of peculiar deaths following a famine or plague.
    • Following this event, Nounuki-sama became trapped in the Kubitachi Mountains, which is why the townspeople now believe it's dangerous to go there.
