This is the 8th Chapter of The Summer Hikaru Died manga series, written and illustrated by Mokumokuren.
Synopsis[]
Yoshiki continues to look after "Hikaru" and tries to teach him more about the things he still doesn't understand very well. With Kubitachi's summer festival right around the corner, there is a lot to see and discover, after all. But not everything that occurs there, seems to be worth celebrating...
Plot[]
"Hikaru" tries to get the attention of Mince-aniki using a toy, but it doesn't work. After Mincemeat cuddles up to Yoshiki, he gives "Hikaru" a squeeze treat to feed him with. He hisses at first, but accepts the treat, although he runs off immediately after "Hikaru" pokes him. "Hikaru" then admits that he feels dumb about not understanding what's going on around him. Yoshiki thinks to himself that "Hikaru" is childish, but trying to grow in his own way.
Later at Yoshiki's house, Yoshiki and "Hikaru" overhear Kaoru asking her mom to fix her yukata. Yoshiki explains that she wants to wear it to the summer festival, which excites "Hikaru" immensely since he is looking forward to going there.
The three of them eventually go to the summer festival together. After they buy takoyaki, Yoshiki overhears the stand workers whispering to one another, wondering why Kaoru hasn't been going to school. "Hikaru" interrupts to say he wants shaved ice, which is sold somewhere near the shrine grounds. However, when the Tsujinaka siblings walk past the torii gate and enter the shrine grounds, "Hikaru" stays behind. He looks at his hand and finds it trembling, with his insides rising to the surface of his skin – he's been bounced back. He tells the siblings to go ahead and buy some shaved ice for him while he uses the toilet. As they go, "Hikaru" wonders who set the boundary there.
When "Hikaru" catches up to Yoshiki later, Kaoru has gone back to the house for extra pocket money. "Hikaru" asks what flavor "Blue Hawaii" is supposed to be, and Yoshiki tells him that apparently all shaved ice flavors are the same, but the different colors are enough to make people feel like they taste different. "Hikaru" asks if he can look the same as another but feel the same as well. Yoshiki recalls "Hikaru"'s crying face from the other day, a face that Hikaru would never have made, and says there's no way. "Hikaru" looks pleased to hear that, and throws his empty ice cup at Yoshiki, saying he's embarrassed. He then asks if that's how Yoshiki figured out that he wasn't the real Hikaru. Yoshiki denies this, and says that he knew because he saw the real Hikaru's corpse.
