Plot[]
Maki approaches his brother who is watching television. A news report announces that two high schoolers – Indou Hikaru and Tsujinaka Yoshiki – have been found dead.
In the Takeda family home, Takeda Hajime recalls an instance from his childhood. His father, Old Man Takeda, had slapped him and yelled at him, demanding to know why Hajime had gone to "that mountain," saying that the whole village could die because of him. His thoughts are interrupted by his wife, who informs him that there's been another suicide, which makes the 5th suicide this month. The Nishidaya family's grandparents hanged themselves at the same time, causing the villagers to fear "it"'s curse will cause mass deaths once again. Their son, Daisuke tries to say it's unlikely, but Hajime scolds him for having a weak sense of danger.
Hajime's wife asks what Tanaka has been doing to help the situation. Hajime tells her not to worry about it and that he'll figure something out. Hajime calls Tanaka, and Tanaka tells him simply that "Nounuki-sama" does not exist. Shocked to hear this, Hajime asks what the purpose of the rituals they've upheld is. Tanaka says that the current situation would still have happened, regardless of whether the village held their rituals or not. Hajime asks what they should do, but Tanaka just tells him to think on his own and decide what's important to him, rather than relying on tradition or rules. He also warns Hajime that someone might be paying him a visit soon.
Two villagers discuss the mountain, saying it looks more eerie than usual lately. They notice there's a crack in the ground that they don't think was there before. While they talk, a woman walks past them.
