Indou Hikaru[]

At first, "Hikaru" showed little regard toward Indou Hikaru as an individual, often referring to only Hikaru's memories or feelings that he inherited.[1] He is open about his strong feelings of affection for Yoshiki.[2] Notably, he finds it hard to distinguish how much of his feelings for Yoshiki and his friends are his own versus the real Hikaru's, and this causes him distress.[3][4] In general, "Hikaru" has expressed gratitude and excitement at getting to consciously experience life,[1] although he doesn't seem to direct this gratitude toward Hikaru. However, as "Hikaru" starts to become familiar with humans' reaction to death, he eventually realizes that Hikaru is someone who would have been mourned, and begins to expresses more curiosity about the sort of individual Indou Hikaru was before he died.[5]

Tsujinaka Yoshiki[]

After coming to inhabit the body of Indou Hikaru, "Hikaru" attempted to deceive Yoshiki by hiding his true form. He is extremely relieved when Yoshiki figures him out but agrees not to tell anyone. He is very honest about his strong feelings of affection or attachment toward Yoshiki.[2] Although he at first believed these feelings may be inherited from Indou Hikaru,[3] "Hikaru" also appears to have developed his own attachment to Yoshiki – he expresses how Yoshiki's acceptance of his true form finally gave him a sense of belonging, which is what he always wanted.[4] "Hikaru" has wondered whether human romantic love is the same feeling that he has for Yoshiki,[6] but has since come to the conclusion that his love for Yoshiki is neither romantic nor platonic, but something entirely his own.[7]

As such, "Hikaru" is fiercely loyal and protective of Yoshiki. He is determined to keep Yoshiki safe from other dangerous spirits[8] and will put up a fight against them to ensure they cannot enter and harm him.[9][10] However, "Hikaru"'s emotions can sometimes overwhelm him, leading to possessive behavior over Yoshiki[3] or physical outbursts of his insides. He is extremely afraid of Yoshiki leaving him, even having dreams about the possibility of being unneeded by him. Because of this fear, he is willing to put aside old arguments[11] and constantly adjusts his behavior according to Yoshiki's feelings. For example, Yoshiki is horrified that "Hikaru" attempted to kill Asako[12] and he later scolds "Hikaru" for not valuing human life.[13] Even though "Hikaru" doesn't fully understand human values surrounding life and death, he tries his best to learn and promises not to do such a thing again.[5]

In line with that, from Yoshiki's initial perspective of "Hikaru" is that he is a childish creature who needs to be taught a more human sense of right and wrong. He acknowledges that "Hikaru" is deeply lonely, and decides that he is the one who should teach him.[11] Because he holds a sense of responsibility over "Hikaru", Yoshiki carries intense guilt whenever "Hikaru" hurts other people. Even when these feelings manifest in Yoshiki trying to kill "Hikaru" himself, "Hikaru" does not react with anger. Rather, he accepts that his actions were the reason Yoshiki did it, even going as far as to physically weaken himself so that Yoshiki can feel a sense of security.[4]

However, over time, Yoshiki begins to feel that "Hikaru" doesn't have to understand humans – "Hikaru" is a completely separate type of being, so he prefers that "Hikaru" isn't human and doesn't try to be.[14]

Yamagishi Asako[]

At first, Asako was wary of "Hikaru" – since she is able to hear spirits, she could sense that something was off with him. Although he attempted to kill her when she confronted him, resulting in deafness in one of her ears,[4] Asako does not hold a grudge. She finds it scary that her friend has been replaced and absurd that Yoshiki can carry on as normal. She's saddened that her friend is truly gone, but at the same time, she admits that she can't bring herself to hate the new "Hikaru".[5]

Tadokoro Yuuki & Maki Yuuta[]

Yuuki and Maki are both completely unaware that Indou Hikaru has been replaced. As a result, "Hikaru" has been able to maintain the same friendly relationship that the real Hikaru did.
